I’ve talked about my troubled skin and how I cleared my acne here. And when I say acne, I don’t mean a few zits every once in a while. I mean deep, painful, cystic acne. We’re talking blackheads and huge pores that ooze oil. I mean the gross stuff that people don’t like to talk about and acne commercials don’t like to show.

It was bad.

And while I used to spend a ton of money on cleansers, toners and creams, not I mostly just use homemade products from my kitchen. Because it’s so much cheaper and so much more effective! You really do not need to spend a ton of money on products for your skin. I assure you that what you put in your mouth will affect your skin more than any magical cream ever could.

Making your own skin care products isn’t only cheaper, it’s healthier too. Most products are loaded with parabens, chemicals, fragrances and toxins, definitely not what you want to put on your face. This toner is just two simple ingredients mixed with water and works better than any other toner I’ve ever used.

It balanced the pH of my skin, tightens pores, removes makeup and controls oil. I love it.

Ingredients:

  • 1 part apple cider vinegar (I ONLY use THIS brand)
  • 3 parts water
  • 20 drops of melaleuca aka tea tree oil (it is important to use THIS brand of essential oils, I’ve used tea tree before and it barely did anything – this kills bacteria, controls breakouts, cleans and tightens pores)

Just combine all ingredients and keep in a mason jar. Easy! Cheap! Awesome!

  1. Do you use this toner as a replacement for my regular OCM? Or do I use this on top of cleansing with oil?

  2. Could I add lemon juice or rose water to this toner for additional benefit?

What would you suggest as a cleanser. Currently I use honey with tea tree oil and lavender

An oil cleanser like coconut oil and castor, I’ve also heard good things about doTERRA’s cleanser.

Yep – tamanu mixed with melaleuca, lavender and frankincense.

Pretty much indefinitely because it’s apple cider vinegar which lasts forreevvverrr. Or at least a really long time.

  4. I have been using witch hazel for a toner and am just about out, so have been looking at other things to try. I have heard that tea tree oil is not something pregnant women should use, but was wondering since it is so diluted, would it be ok for me to use?

Also, since using honey as a cleanser, WH has a toner, and coconut oil as my moisturizer, I have noticed a big decrease is break outs. They were never really bad before, but who likes them, right? I only have a few pimples every now and again since changing my routine, more so right now with all the hormones. This is good for any kind of skin, right?

Yep! And I’ve never heard tea tree should be avoided during pregnancy, but check with your doc first.

I am highly intolerant to all things melaleuca. I ended up spending hundreds of dollars at the dermatologist this summer. It caused my face and skin to look as it had been burned. I itched and peeled for weeks. Is there an alternate tea tree oil to use?

    • dani stout Reply

Melaeuca and tea tree are the same. If you had that bad of a reaction you’ll have to avoid it altogether. Geranium may work well for you as it’s antiseptic and helps control oil.

I’m having a hard time finding a container for this recipe. I originally put it in a mason jar but the lid rusted and rust stared floating in the toner.

    • dani stout Reply

I use a mini mason jar with a plastic cap. Unfortunately I don’t have a link, they’re just part of the jars/lids I’ve collected over the years.

  7. Do you leave this in the refrigerator? That’s my only question. I’m adding lavender to mine too .

    • dani Reply

If you’re using it regularly/fast enough, that’s not required.

  8. With parts vs drops in the recipe, I can’t help but wonder what the ratio is.
It looks like you just fill up the small jar? How many ounces is it? I’d really like to make this.
I just paid $80 for an acne fighting facial yesterday and my skin is the clearest this morning that it’s been for over a DECADE(tons of scarring/hyper pigmentation BUT at least I don’t have a billion bumps!). I want to keep it that way and my esthetician used a tea tree oil toner during part of it.

  9. What is the tea tree oil brand? The link isn’t working anymore.
