I’ve written about my skin woes before, you can read a bit more about that here.

Basically, in fourth grade, I woke up one day with a face covered in blemishes.

I thought it would go away and clear up on its own, but it stuck around until my early twenties. And when I say blemishes, I mean more than a few zits. I’m talking about deep, painful pimples that. I mean pus, pain and blood blisters under my skin.  I had a thick layer of oil that could almost drip off of my face, and yet still somehow had dry skin that would flake off in chunks. It was awful and I was painfully embarrassed.

After clearing my skin through diet, I was left with a face full of scars.

I meet so many people who say they had problem skin as a teen, and yet their skin is as smooth and scar-free as a baby’s butt. If you had skin issues and were left with no scars, you’re either insanely lucky or you didn’t actually have bad skin issues.

I’m sure any skin sufferer knows what I mean. The scars we are left with are not only embarrassing, but can be a constant reminder of our once horrible skin, and worst of all, negatively impact our confidence levels. As someone who thinks confidence is one of the most attractive characteristics a person can sport, no one should be held back by their scars.

Unfortunately, most scar treatments involve toxic chemical peels or expensive, harsh lasers. While this cream won’t be an overnight cure, it has helped so many scar sufferers (including me!). I go into much more detail about this in my book, but tamanu oil promotes new tissue formation, MSM promotes collagen formation, coconut oil is antibacterial and tea tree helps prevent future breakouts.

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz cocoa butter
  • 2 oz tamanu oil (I use THIS brand)
  • 4 tbsp coconut oil, softened (buy coconut oil HERE)
  • 10 drops each of the following oils:
    • melaleuca (tea tree oil)
    •  lavender
    • frankincense

Directions:

  1. Get out a large glass bowl and a whisk.
  2. Gently heat the cocoa butter over very low heat.
  3. To the glass bowl, add the cocoa butter, then add the tamanu and whisk.
  4. Once combined, add the softened coconut oil and whisk.
  5. Store in mason jars! You can keep one in the bathroom and one in your freezer until you’re ready to use.

  1. I have been suffering from cystic acne on my back for the past year. I am in my late 30’s and this is the first time I’ve ever had this. Do you think this cream might help with that as well? I have scarring on my back from just this past year and these horrible bumps just keep appearing. I’m at a loss on what to do and it’s horribly embarrassing.

I do think it would help! The coconut oil and tea tree will also help control the acne, but acne starts with diet.

Hi, Dani ! Great post ??. I have some rolling scars on one of my cheeks, and one near my mouth. I’ve been using Tretinoin .025. I still buffer, but I’ve built up to nightly use. I believe the Tretinoin has helped to smooth out the scars. I see old pictures and my scars looked a lot more noticeable. So happy ? I googled ‘Ret247get’ and got tretinoin. I also have a very hydrating routine, which I think helps plump up the skin so that scars are less noticeable. I have a certain elevator I take once a week for work. It has the most stressful, disturbing lighting in the world. It makes skin texture look 10,000 times worse. I remember seeing myself in a selfie in that lighting back when I started Tret. Well, recently, just to torture myself, I took out the selfie cam again in that same elevator and noticed a much smoother texture than before. I sound toxic and obsessive. Sigh. But they’ve gotten better! I will probably wait until I run out of this Tret tube and then up to .05.

  2. I’m preparing to make my yearly batch of sunscreen with olive oil, coconut oil , beeswax, and powdered zinc. I would love to try this recipe and am wondering if by adding zinc (and beeswax?) this could be used as a sunscreen. Kinda random, but any thoughts?

Thanks for sharing your recipe, but in your directions there are no directions on how to apply the cream? Do you put it on for a few minutes, an hour, until it wears off?

  4. I am sensitive to even very diluted tea tree oil, the second it hits my skin it turns red and I am sneezing like crazy, which is a bummer since I have heard great stories of it doing wonders for people. Is there a different oil to substitute in here? Thanks!

You could try lemongrass, or even a small amount of oregano.

  5. Do you know if this would work on flea bite/mosquito bite scars?

  6. I can’t use coconut oil because it is so highly comedogenic so it clogs my pores up like crazy. Any alternatives?

  7. I have been using the Dr Max Powers Scar Cream twice a day, every day, for a couple of weeks and I am noticing improvement. My post-acne hyperpigmentation is fading and my old acne scars that left pits in my face are smoothing out.

For those of you who say the Dr Max Serum is sticky, you’re using too much. It dries within a minute and then I put on moisturizer and foundation. No problems at all.

My son will be trying this for his acne scars…I’ll update with results 🙂 I have large areas of dark pigmentation on my face from sun damage. Does this even out pigmentation? If not, any other recommendations?

    • dani stout Reply

Frankincense and tamanu are both great for sun damage!

  9. I am currently in the hospital my acne got so bad with pitted cysts it became infected. I plastic surgeon had to cut my face open and he warned me there will be pretty bad scaring on my right cheek. I am beyond upset. Once my skin heals from surgery and I get a dr ok I plan to try this. I’m so desperate I already have craters from my teen year and I’m in my mid 20s now. I am also as cosmetologist so I take great care of my skin, and I eat extremely well ,it’s just crappy skin!! But thank you I am hoping this may help me!

    • The best advise i can give you from my own personal experience with painful cystic acne to now acne free is this -most important—- is drink lots of lemon water to start and end your day, add Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar 1 tsp if you like, that’s very good for all kinds of health things also. This will make your body more alkaline and flush out the toxins. Always start and end your day with lots of water. Also you may be like me, I had a caffeine sensitivity and had to switch even my teas to decaf & avoid cheap chocolate. I also started and swear by a supplement called DIM its for estrogen metabolism if your acne is hormonal you will see immediate results by the next morning. I buy the vitamin shop brand of DIM. I wish you the best of everything for all ready this post. I’m now searching for ways to heal my faded indent scars. What a journey its been. I’m using coconut oil extract and msm powder I picked up today. Excited be where i am its been a tough journey. Well take care & blessing to all.

  10. Hi Dani, How long did you use your scar cream for before your scars started to disappear? and how long in total did it take before they were all gone? Your skin is so beautiful, I wouldn’t even know you had acne or scars.

  11. Where do u purchase the first 2 items??i have not heard of these. Thanks I look forward to trying this.. I have some really bad scaring

  12. Hi, does this work on deep, pitted acne scars (craters) and how long until you start to see results?

    thanks

    • dani Reply

It does but it took me a really long time of repeated use to dent my scars (I have the same). Like, at least a year.

  13. I have tracheotomy and feeding tube scar. Any chance this would work?

  14. The links for tamanu oil and coconut oil do not work. How about giving the brand name?

  15. Does this work on more shallow boxcar scars? If so, roughly how long does it take to even them out? Also, are all the oils absolutely needed or can you take some out and still have it work? I don’t think my acne is severe enough to need tea-tree oil, most of my scars are from over-picking blackheads that weren’t ready.

    Thank You!

I say it can’t hurt to try! Oils work differently for people so you might still see benefit even if some are left out.

  16. Hey, I’m a little concerned about using these oils in concentrated forms. I’ve read about it on different websites, but havent found any about mixing it with other stuff. Is it ok to just use the oils as they are, or should I mix them with water before adding them? Thanks.

    • dani Reply

If you follow the recipe as written, you will be fine. Frankincense and lavender are ok undiluted for some people, but I wouldn’t recommend tea tree oil undiluted in large amounts. Essential oils also don’t mix with water – that’s why there is a carrier of coconut and tamanu.

  18. Thank you for sharing your experience and this recipe! Was curious about MSM. You mentioned it in your blog post, but then it wasn’t in the ingredients/instructions list. If I were to add some, how much would you recommend? Thank you!
