Five Things I Do Daily To Keep My Skin Clear, Hydrated and Healthy

Lemon water with coconut oil when I wake up. After I brush my teeth and tongue scrape (an ancient Ayurvedic way to detox) I drink a full glass of lemon water and take a tablespoon of coconut oil. Starting your morning out this way will improve your overall health, but your skin specifically. Here’s why. First, after eight hours of sleep (hopefully, you got eight hours, that’s another thing I do every single night to keep my skin healthy), the body is dehydrated. Drinking a glass of lemon water jumpstarts digestion. But adding the lemon also detoxes the liver – one of our main eliminatory and detoxification organs. This is because lemon encourages the liver to produce more enzymes, thereby more effectively removing toxins, waste, chemicals, unfriendly bacteria, etc. from the body. In turn, this not only improves digestion and detoxifies, but reduces inflammation as well. Guess what is at…

The Oil Cleansing Method For Clear, Beautiful Skin

When I first read about oil cleansing years ago, I thought one thing: Y’all are insane. How could adding oil to my seriously oily skin be a good idea? Wouldn’t using oil to wash my face not cause me to break out even worse than I already was? How could oil clean my face at all?! So I didn’t give it a try for another year or so. Until I had to see for myself what all the hype was about. Then my tune was more like: Holy sh*t. This actually works really well.  While oil cleansing might seem counterintuitive, it actually makes a lot of sense. Especially if you have oily or acne-prone skin. Let me explain. WHAT IS OIL CLEANSING EXACTLY? Simply put, oil cleansing is washing your face with oil. You can use a variety of oils, but one of those oils has to be castor oil.…

The Most Detoxifying DIY Face Mask For Clear, Glowing Skin

I have a ritual every Sunday. I prop my computer on my toilet, turn on Freaks and Geeks, put on this face mask and relax while taking a detox bath. It’s such an awesome way to chill out and get ready for the week ahead. Especially with a super clean face and pores that aren’t clogged with grime (hey, it happens). For my acne prone skin with pores that just get bigger if I don’t clean them regularly, this has made a huge change in my skin. I always do this before bed, so I usually start my bath around 9. First, I exfoliate using sea salt and jojoba oil. This allows the mask to penetrate more deeply into the skin. I let the mask harden on my face and after removing it, immediately apply my homemade moisturizer (which I’ll be selling soon, so keep your eyes peeled!). My homemade…

Homemade Hydrating Hair Mask

This homemade hydrating hair mask with coconut oil, olive oil and essential oils will make your dry and damaged hair soft, shiny and the healthiest it’s ever been! This homemade hydrating hair mask is one of the reasons I still have hair. Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic. But it IS one of the reasons I still have long, healthy hair. No matter whether I use heat tools or not, my hair, especially my ends, tends to get really dry. I once went four months without using heat tools, it didn’t make a difference. Now I use them once or twice a week and my hair is still doing really well. In fact, it’s been growing really quickly. Why this homemade hydrating hair mask will rescue your damaged, dry hair: Guys, trust me,  use this hydrating hair mask and your dry damaged hair will be the softest and shiniest it’s…

The Best Natural Remedies For The Stomach Flu

A few days ago I woke up bright and early to wish my husband a happy birthday, only to find out that he was running a fever of 101 and seemingly had the stomach flu. You know – chills, nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, the works. The poor guy. We had plans go out to his favorite restaurant, but he could barely get out of bed. Depsite being called the stomach flu (or stomach bug), it’s not actually the flu. The flu is influenza, a virus that mainly affects the respiratory system. The stomach flu, or gastroenteritis, is actually an infection of the stomach and intestines that can be caused either by bacteria or a virus. Unfortunately, most medical recommendations for gastroenteritis include letting it run its course, hydrating and getting rest. Instead of taking a watch and wait approach, letting the bacteria or virus work its way out of his…

DIY Lip Scrub

The other day I was fortunate enough to try some of Jeffree Star’s new lip colors (husband works for him). They were amazing and the colors were awesome. But when I went to try one on, I realized my lips were insanely chapped. Like, grossly chapped. Skin hanging off. It’s easier to not notice this when wearing nothing on your lips. It was kind of sick. I’m pretty sure it’s because I spent all of last weekend at the beach and didn’t use an SPF chapstick on my lips. Winter ain’t the only season your lips can get chapped. So I immediately made a lip scrub. I usually only make this in winter, but summer is obviously a good season to make it as well. This DIY lip scrub super easy and tastes pretty amazing. And it’s great at sloughing off dead skin on your lips. Ingredients 2 tbsp organic…

The Top Seven Ways To Boost HDL (The “Good” Cholesterol)

Let me get this out of the way first: cholesterol and heart disease are weakly linked. Cholesterol has been vilified, but the real villain is inflammation. Cholesterol is absolutely necessary for our health. Cholesterol is necessary for proper hormone function, cholesterol is necessary for vitamin D production, and roughly 25% of cholesterol is found in the brain, we need it for our brains to properly function. It is absolutely essential. So in writing this article, my aim isn’t to vilify cholesterol. I want to make this very clear. Cholesterol is great. But when HDL is low and LDL particle number is high, that can be an issue. Remember that when your cholesterol is tested, you want to be tested not just for basic HDL/LDL numbers, but for particle numbers. This is a much more accurate test of your cholesterol. A low LDL particle number is good, while it’s possible to have low…

DIY Moisturizing Body Wash

For the past several months, DC has basically been Antarctica. It seems like winter has been so long, so cold, so grey and so unending. At first I love winter, the holidays, the snow. But by February, I’m over it. I just want summer to be here. Especially because winter doesn’t do my skin any favors. It’s been so dry that it itches. Like, really itches. Keeps me up when I’m trying to fall asleep because it’s so freaking itchy. And it doesn’t help that I take a million really hot showers every winter just to warm myself up. In fact, that makes the whole situation way worse. Which is how I got the genius idea of making my soap super moisturizing. This is pretty much the easiest thing ever and I’m not sure how I didn’t think of it sooner. You probably have these items laying around your house,…

Mercury & Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie

So recently, you may have read about the dumbest thing I’ve done to my health. Then you may have read about how I’m detoxing from mercury. Well, while I was at the dentist, the doc also tested me for other toxins in my system and found that I’m harboring lead and aluminum in addition to mercury. Not so great, especially considering that we’re planning on getting knocked up next year. When I began this detox journey, I was taking a lot of pills, a lot of teaspoons of this and scoops of that. It was getting difficult to remember to take each supplement every day, which is why I came up with this smoothie. It doesn’t taste bad (though honestly, it’s not the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten either). The chlorella and bentonite are extremely effective at removing mercury, heavy metals, and other toxins. If you really want to…

The Healthiest, Most Detoxifying Green Smoothie

Most people do green smoothies completely wrong. They add a shit ton of fruit and little to no fat. This does two things: 1 – Spike your blood sugar. 2 – Ensures you won’t absorb any of the fat soluble vitamins that may be present – A, E, D and K. A lot of people also use smoothies as replacements for meals. For majority of people, I do not recommend this! Smoothies make a good snack, they’re a good option if you need to add more nutrition to your diet, or in my case, they’re sometimes a good option when I’m sort of hungry in the mornings but not really. Your smoothie should be loaded with healthy veggies (this is a green smoothie after all) but it also need to have fat. Fat will help you absorb the fat soluble vitamins but fat is also incredibly nutrient dense. Avocado and…
