Easy Banana Bread (Grain, Dairy & Nut Free)

Not only is this bread gluten and grain free, it doesn’t have any dairy, nuts or added sweeteners. This makes it a safe option for breakfast or great as a quick and filling snack that won’t weigh you down or spike your blood sugar. It took about 5 minutes to throw together and 30 minutes in the oven, making this one of the easiest desserts ever (which I like). Just goes to show you don’t need to spend a lot of time in the kitchen to make tasty treats that are also healthy. It really couldn’t be easier, and you can freeze it too!   Easy Grain-free Banana Bread Not only is this banana bread gluten and grain free, it doesn’t have any dairy, nuts or added sweeteners. This makes it a safe option for breakfast or great as a quick and filling snack that won’t weigh you down or spike…

Greek Goat Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms

Greek food is my favorite food. Dill and oregano are two of my favorite spices and they work really well in these stuffed ‘shrooms, but feel free to add or omit any spices. You can also use feta cheese instead of goat cheese, which was my plan until I realized I didn’t have any feta. I also added red pepper flakes, because I’m obsessed with all things spicy. Greek Goat Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms Prep time: 10 mins Cook time: 10 mins Total time: 20 mins Ingredients 6 mushrooms caps, stems removed and set aside 1 tbsp butter, ghee or coconut oil 5-6 cups spinach (it shrinks!) 2 tbsp sun dried tomatoes 1 garlic clove 3.5 oz goat cheese dash of oregano dash of dill Instructions Preheat oven to 375. Liver Stuffed Bacon Wrapped Jalapeños

Let’s be honest, most people think liver is disgusting. The truth is that liver is pretty delicious, especially if you make it right. One of the best meals I ever had included duck liver pate and holy hell was it amazing. Most people also don’t realize that liver is the most nutritious food on earth. Yup, you read that right. More nutrient dense than “super foods” like chia seeds or goji berries, more nutrient dense than broccoli, more nutrient dense that kale. See this chart I made: Kale (100 g) Beef Liver (100 g) Iron 1.47 (non-heme) 4.90 Phosphorous 92 387 Zinc 0.56 4 Niacin 1 13.175 Folate 141 290 B6 0.271 1.083 B12 0 59.30 Vitamin A (retinol) 500 (has to be converted) 4968 Vitamin D 0 49 Liver is a nutritional powerhouse! Which is why instead of taking a multivitamin, I recommend eating liver; or at least taking…

Flourless Chocolate Cake With Caramel Sauce

Scott and I are currently snowed in. DC kind of shuts down after 2-3 inches of snow so now that we’re at 4-5 inches, the city is dead. We’re holed up here with our cats and this flourless chocolate cake. Scott has already had two pieces for breakfast, so I’d say it’s definitely dude-approved. Last weekend we went to a restaurant in Annapolis that apparently had the most amazing flourless chocolate cake. I know this because I heard people talking about it when I was eavesdropping on their conversation (what? Like you don’t do that in restaurants?). I wasn’t in the mood for sweets, and knew it would be full of sugar and other questionable ingredients so I didn’t order it and figured I could make it myself at home. It’s already flourless so I didn’t have to worry about the gluten component, but most recipes called for sugar and…

Healthy Chicken Tacos

I love me a good taco. Who doesn’t? They’re the Mexican version of sandwich and they’re spicy and delicious. Also, it’s WAY easier to make a grain-free version of a taco and make it taste good than it is to make a grain-free version of a sandwich. Have you tried grain-free bread? Not so good. Have you tried my taco shell recipe?! It’s freaking awesome. I use tapioca flour, which is a safe starch and easy to digest. I like to add garlic and chipotle powder to the taco shell, but you can use any spice you like. Or not. Do your own thang. How To Easily Roast a Chicken (& Save Money Doing It)

Eating healthy is not too expensive. This is a huge misconception, and a lot of times it’s an excuse that people make to not eat well. Of course, there are some people who genuinely cannot afford to eat, much less eat well; I’m not talking about these situations. For most of us, eating well is completely affordable. It just requires a bit of extra planning and effort. Each week I plan out my meals and make my grocery list based only on the ingredients I need to make each meal that week. This saves a ton of money. Ya need a plan at the grocery store! Another money saving tip I love is roasting a whole chicken. One chicken is so easy to make and can be made into so many different meals. Here’s how I do it. Step 1: Buy an organic chicken. My chicken was five pounds and…

Veganism: Extremely Dangerous For Babies

First of all, let me say that I respect the choice of an adult to make a diet decision. But I recently read an article in which actress Jenna Dewan said of her daughter, ”She eats fruits and veggies and nothing else.” Nothing else? Where is this baby going to get her EPA and DHA? What about healthy fats in general? And vitamin A (retinol)? What about B12? Babies have died from lack of vitamin A and B12! To be clear, I don’t believe that any parent who feeds their child a vegan diet means to hurt them. I don’t think they’re even aware of the dangers tied to feeding a baby a plant-based diet. As a society, we often equate a vegan diet with health while turning up our noses at animal products. But eating a vegan diet is not the same as being healthy. As a result, there…

Reason #8923 To Drink Red Wine: Probiotics

I love red wine so much. I love wine while cooking. It’s great for hangin’ out. I like it while watching sports. I’d say I’m a wino, but I only drink organic wine, and I don’t drink too much (except ya know, once in a while, like on my birthday). Wine is a fermented drink that is made by allowing grapes to ferment. The chemical composition promotes fermentation without adding enzymes, sugar or water. Yeast consumes the sugars in the grapes, turning them into alcohol. The wine we know of today has been consumed for thousands of years, making this a drink our ancestors definitely enjoyed. From National Geographic, Wine snobs might shudder at the thought, but the first wine-tasting may have occurred when Paleolithic humans slurped the juice of naturally fermented wild grapes from animal-skin pouches or crude wooden bowls. If it’s good enough for my ancestors, it’s good…

The Benefits of Bentonite Clay

Yes. I eat clay out of my rocket ship shot glass. Clay is one of the most effective detoxifying foods available to us. While many people think it’s unnecessary to detox regularly, consider that we carry more of a toxic burden than any generation in history. Between pollution, toxins in our water, GMOs, and toxins in our food, a high-stress lifestyle and a lack of sleep, we are overloaded with toxins. Internal cleansing is more important than ever, especially considering the sharp increase in cancer that is only expected to worsen. I know it may seem a bit odd to eat clay, but many of our ancestors have been eating clay for a very long time; it was first recorded in prehistoric times and dates back to ancient Mesopotamia. Indigenous cultures around the world still use clay, both internally and externally. It’s amazing how ancient, native wisdom is still alive and…
